Summer Fun

Summer can be wonderful. Summer also wreaks havoc on routines.

Many people believe that summer is the easiest season to “stay on track.” Reasons for this line of thinking include the abundance of delicious produce, the warm weather making it easier to be active, the more relaxed vibe of summer, and the fact that many summertime foods are naturally lighter and healthier.

My experience working with countless individuals over a decade of summers is that the opposite is true. The sense of ease may be present at the outset of the season, but as we move through the warm months, the reality is different. The three broad areas of challenges are a change in daily routines, vacations, and more socializing.

My message is consistently this: each of us has the power AND the ability to figure out a way to eat, indeed to live, that feels balanced, straightforward, and sustainable. It is not an easy process, but it is a simple one if you approach it methodically and consistently.

The “best time” to lose weight is a red herring. The truth is that the time of year does not matter. Instead work on figuring out:

  • Which high calorie foods you truly enjoy, and those you can live without.

  • How to be consistent and clear in your thinking about what you want your life to look like and how you want to feel.

  • How to take a pause in any given moment in order to ask yourself if the decision you are about to make moves you closer to, or further from your goals.

How does your summer look? How do you want to feel on Labor Day weekend? Where have you historically struggled, and what changes can you make while still having fun?
