Should I Eat Bananas?

If you like them and they work for you - YES!

If I had a dime for every client who asked this question, I would be rich! I can safely say that the question does not come because bananas are to blame for the extra weight that we have on our bodies. The question comes for two reasons; as fruits go, bananas are high in sugar and so ended up on some list of demonized foods, and secondly, people are looking for a magic bullet. There is no magic bullet in weight loss - it is a whole collection of changes. The closest thing to a magic bullet is moving towards whole foods and away from processed foods.

Instead of spending your time and energy worrying about the level of sugar in a piece of fruit, you could:

  • ask yourself where you could replace a processed food with a whole food;

  • examine where and when you consistently overeat, and take a step to address that;

  • discern the thoughts that drive your unwanted actions.

Change is hard and it’s uncomfortable. It is no wonder we want easy solutions, but any thoughtful adult knows that there is rarely an easy solution TO ANYTHING.

So today - slice a banana into your smoothie, or on top of your oatmeal and recognize that it is an excellent source of potassium, a mineral that every tissue in your body needs, and think of a different way to cut back on sugar if that is what you want to do.
