Making Weight Loss Hard

Let’s make this easier.

I am interested in the conversations people are having about their weight loss journeys. There is an endless amount of content out there and I have been struck by the general tone of helplessness and frustration that so many people express. When I read the posts I am saddened because in order to lose weight, so many are taking actions that are actually making their lives harder.

How do we make weight loss harder than it has to be?

  1. We use exercise as a primary weight loss tool, and practically punish ourselves with it.

  2. We drastically restrict calories.

  3. We change our entire diet overnight.

  4. We pore over nutrition data but do not address our thoughts around food, and why we are overeating in the first place.

  5. We chase a number on the scale.

  6. We give our power to outside experts and their recommendations about what is best for YOU, and what YOU should do, crowding out our internal wisdom.

The weight loss journey can be challenging; let’s make it easier for ourselves.

  1. Let’s gradually change how we eat. Start by simply eating less of what you already eat. Make it sustainable and void of deprivation.

  2. Let’s work on our thoughts about our bodies and what we are capable of.

  3. Let’s assess how we need to change our environments and habits to support ourselves.

  4. Let’s be patient.

  5. Let’s use exercise as a tool for strengthening our bodies, clearing our heads, and sleeping better.

  6. Let’s move away from conversations about WHAT to eat and towards conversations about WHY we eat.

Today - remember that you are powerful. Use your power to work towards what you want, and assess if there is a way to make it simpler for yourself.
