Big Picture Goals

Do you want to change what you eat, or change your life?

Are you making goals for yourself for what you want to weigh, or how you want to live?

When we view our food choices in a vacuum, we are missing the point.  Often, the way we eat is to compensate for other parts of our lives that are lacking in some way.

If we looked at food as one way we take care of ourselves, instead of the only way we take care of ourselves, the whole conversation could change.

Do you find joy in your days?  Do you find your work fulfilling or inspiring, at least some of the time?  Do you have relationships with people whose company you genuinely enjoy - who support you, that you have fun with?  Does your home environment provide you with a space for relaxing, recharging and resting?

We can cut calories, exercise hard, or cut carbs...but if we do not get a handle on the other ways our lives are out of balance, we will not only fall short of our weight loss goals, but we will also miss the whole point of trying to become healthier.

Many people say they want to lose weight because they want to be healthier.  That may look like improved BP or no diabetes, and although they are surely positive, these are outcomes that may not bring more actual pleasure into your days, and without more ease and pleasure in your days, it is really hard to sustain any weight loss you may have.

What if being healthier meant living a life that felt better on a day to day basis?  More filled with joy, healthy relationships, a different job, or more opportunities for creativity.  What if it looked like getting a handle on your finances or your sedentary lifestyle?

Feeling good can come from weight loss.  Feeling good will come from making better food choices.  But living fully?  Changing your food is only a part of that.
